Who reviews this stuff?
I am not going to give this paper the dignity of an citation to you to help the altmetric, but part of our job is to call poor animal experiments. However, this is one of the reasons why EAEologists are living on borrowed time and if COVID-19 does not get them, then any ethical review panel should. This is where international Societies have to step up to the plate and should set standards. I beleive there must be minimum standards that no one and I mean no one goes below to accept any article that does not adhere to them.
Sadly, this is what happens when you send animal work Eastwards…due to legislation and cost. This is yet another paper from China. There is no mention of any form of ethical review. This clearly did not happen.
BACKGROUND: Neurofilament proteins as biomarkers of axonal degeneration have the potential to improve our capacity to predict and monitor neurological outcome in experimental autoimmune encephalitis (EAE), a model of multiple sclerosis (MS). We urgently need more accurate early predictive markers to direct the clinician when to provide neuroprotective therapy.…..So we are going to use neurofilament as a biomarker for nerve damage to test EAE when it was done by us and others at least twenty years ago and it has been used in countless human studies, I am sorry to say Why do this study? Where is the 3Rs in this
AIMS: To highlight the possible roles of neurofilament proteins in physiological and pathophysiological processes in the MS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty female Wistar rats with MOG35-55 peptide induced EAE were randomly divided into two parts: control group and EAE group. All of them were along with expanded disability status scale (EDSS). So at EDSS 7 do we have the rats in a wheel chair however they have strunk because now they are….. The mice were sacrificed (ritual killing) on day 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 after the first immunization. So why would you look for nerve damage before the immune response arrives in the CNS? Supernatant and pellet were separated at the same time. The degradation rates of NF in the brain nerve and spinal cord of each rat were measured by Western Blotting. So you use a rather semi quantitative meaure when you can do it quantitatively with other methods
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS:Neurofilament light protein may be more useful as a measure of ongoing neurodegenerative activity in EAE, which would make this protein a potential candidate for use as a surrogate marker for assessment of treatments aimed at reducing axonal injury. Eh…which rock has the author been living under as it is used for years in humans. Future studies are warranted to support or refute the value neurofilament in clinical practice. This says nothing.
So now the education if you get desparate. I haven’t had any loo roll for a few weeks, I am cutting this into squares and threading on a bit of string, like my Nan used to do, when they have rationing after WWII.
What you get your news digitally!…I guess this would be abit smeary if you you have to use your phone. We can call this the Izal approach.
For those not old enough to remember. Izal was a toilet tissue that the Councils used to put in public Toilets…I am sure to make sure you never used them for a number 2 . Izal is a bit like grease-proof paper and totally non-absorbant. Put a bit of butter on greaseproof paper and rub it on a pan if you can’t picture it. When I was a kid I used to go to my aunties in the School Holiday and they used to have Izal…Needless to say I have developed wonderful bowel control….Maybe I can wait until the Grass growns:-)
Anyway remember to wash your hands (Click here to see how) https://multiple-sclerosis-research.org/2020/03/we-all-ignore-the-google-doodle/
We have trained out beasties to be clean, I am sure you can do it
