The Royal London Hospital

T

A lot of you don’t know that Barts-MS is an umbrella term we coined several years ago to capture our research and teaching activities, which happen at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, and our NHS activities as part of Barts Health NHS Trust and its feeder hospitals.

Our clinical MS services are predominantly based at The Royal London Hospital, in Whitechapel in the East end of London. This hospital is a very special place to work and has a remarkable backstory. Its biggest claim to fame was that it was the first charitable hospital to open in the British Isles, i.e. anyone attending ‘The London’ as it was called back then did not have to pay. This principle of receiving healthcare free at the point of access subsequently became one of the founding principles of the NHS.

At the moment our hospital is under severe pressure from admissions of patients with COVID-19 on top of the usual winter surge, which makes it remarkable that some of our staff had the time to make the following video to wish you all a very Merry Christmas.
