If you have every studied evolution as a means of the the natural selection of species, you will see the case of the peppered moth. This a noctural moth that would spend the day on tree trunks and the historical colour was mottled (black and white). Then came the industrial revolution and the factories poured out smoke. The trees were blackened and the white variant became bird food. However a mutation occurred and this turned the moths black, they survived and flourished whilst the white ones were banished to the country side with clean air. As the air was cleaned the white and the trees got their natural light colour back, the white ones returned. This occurred before Darwins “Origin of Species” and was an example of natural selection that challengd deine will. We are no seeing another example
The SARS-COV-2 virus virus originated we believe in China and as rapidly air-travelled round the world. As the virus replicates it mutates to be different from the founder strain. It may be just not do anything, but scientitsts use it as a post code. So we can tell that the virus brought into the UK largel came from Italy, with our winterholidays. Then we were let out again and this time we could see the virus arriving from Spain and spreading as people broke quarentining rules. Now we have a good example of Natural selection. This can be seen with the so-called UK and South African variants. These were variants from the virus where the mutation created a advantage to the virus and it allows it to spread quicker
It becomes dominant. Likewise, the South Africa variant has the same mutation which was also seen earlier in Scotland. The virus does not get extra mutations my mating. But if one mutation that allows faster spread becomes dominant it is the base on which the next set of mutations occur. This may help spread more and may make the vaccines work less effectively. So the quicker we can reduce the spread of the virus the better. Vaccination is one major route of this problem. Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is causing a world-wide pandemic. A variant of SARS-COV-2 (20I/501Y.V1) recently discovered in the United Kingdom has a single mutation from N501 (asparagine amino acid at position 501 of spike) to Y501 (Tyrosine at positin 501) within the receptor binding domain (Y501-RBD), of the Spike protein of the virus. This variant is much more contagious than the original version (N501-RBD). We found that this mutated version of RBD binds to human Angiotensin Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) a ~10 times more tightly than the native version (N501-RBD). Modeling analysis showed that the N501Y mutation would allow a potential aromatic ring-ring interaction and an additional hydrogen bond between the RBD and ACE2. However, sera from individuals immunized with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine still efficiently block the binding of Y501-RBD to ACE2 though with a slight compromised manner by comparison with their ability to inhibit binding to ACE2 of N501-RBD. This may raise the concern whether therapeutic anti-RBD antibodies used to treat COVID-19 patients are still efficacious. Nevertheless, a therapeutic antibody, Bamlanivimab, still binds to the Y501-RBD as efficiently as its binds to N501-RBD.
