Anti-Virals

A

If you are on anti-CD20 and fingolimod you may not make a very good anti-covid response and so one solution is to delay treatment so you can make an anti-COVID-19 response. However delaying treatment means you run the risk of disease activity.

A solution may be to give an antibody response. However there is something else on the horizon and this is an an anti-viral chemical. This is made by American Merck (Merck Sharp Dome) not the German or MS Merck. This could be given if you get infected to get rid of the virus.

It was developed to treat flu and exerts its antiviral action through introduction of copying errors during viral RNA replication. Molnupiravir inhibits viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, or more precisely, promotes mutations in that enzyme’s actions.

This has apparently been approved today according to the BBC website and will be available mid November which is going to be too late for some people I know, but good news all the same.

  • Yes I have just read that on the BBC.
If you have progressive MS and are in a wheelchair would you advise to push for this antiviral were you to contract covid-19 after two jabs and booster?

    • As someone the position of rooting for someone in hospital at the.moment I was saying hell yeah offer some them out

          • Is there a way to get your antibody levels checked so that it can be logged with your medical notes and helps you plan ahead and and know how careful you need to be.
Only finding levels once you are in hospital is awful.

  • The mode of action worries me a bit… Messing around with RNA replication sounds like it might have nasty, hard to forecast downstream effects.

I think I would still prefer one of the mabs…

  • Could this theoretically work on EBV? I have been considering claiming to have been exposed to HIV to get access to PREP, maybe it would be worth doing the same for molnupiravir at some point?

      • If prof G could make a post of the top 10 best antiviral candidates for ebv that would awesome. 🙂 Also thank you for taking the time to write back. 🙂
