A Day to remember

A

Today is a sad day as Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II is buried. We send our condolences

However, today there is no sitting in front of the tele as we have the first physical science meeting attended this year and the first for many since lock down. The “At the Limits 2022 MS meeting” is surprisingly going ahead at the Royal College of Physicians for monday and tuesday.

Programme (click)

This is an oppertunity to get out as ECTRIMS 2022 in Amsterdam has given me (& You) the two fingers as the “Live-streams” of debates and meeting highlights that we have done in the past are now gone. The only online content is only for “paying customers”.

Nevertheless, you can still come to the inaugural lectures of ProfK and ProfAngry on thursday 22 September 2022 5pm

Date: Thu, 22 Sep 2022
Time: 5-6.30pm
Location: Hybrid Event | Perrin Lecture Theatre, Whitechapel, London | MS Teams

You are invited to join the next event in the FMD Inaugural Lecture series with Prof Klaus Schmierer (Blizard Institute) and Prof Angray Kang (Institute of Dentistry). Please note that this is a joint event with two individual lectures followed by a reception.

Anyway I have had some Royal Experiences….no not to get an MBE:-)

By the Price Albert Statue at the Royal Alber Hall 1983

I saw/met Princess Anne, whilst getting a BSc…..However, I have to say the experience was so boring with a 2-3 hour procession of thousands of names from the whole of London University at the Degree Awards Ceromony, my mum, and I didn’t want to go to the PhD presentation for a second meeting at the Royal Albert Hall.

Was that my first Royal Snub?

However, I did get to see the Queen. As as a school kid, I got the day off and went to Great Yorkshire Show. I was on the road outside the Great Yorkshire Show Ground and the Queen waved to me, well OK she waved, as she zoomed past in her limo.

Seems to be the Story of my life…only yesterday President Biden who was in “the Beast” also zoomed past me.

The Queen at the Great Yorkshire Shown 1977

The next occassion was at the Royal College of Surgeons of England where I got a written invite from Buckingham Palace to meet with HRH EIIR.

I didn’t go. The second snub.

This was because the invite was on the condition that I wore a suit and academic dress. I didn’t want to dress up as I had a busy lab day and I didn’t want to wear my interview suit and a gown and mortar board/Silly hat…so I was locked out of the way until Her Majesty was gone. I suspect she would have refused to wear Jeans and a T-shirt to meet me:-)

The Queen Outside the RCS….I think this was before my time

At the RCS. I was also punch’s distance from Political Royalty as MrsT/Lady Thatcher, the then PrimeMinister, glid a few centimeters past me. I say punch as I was with a real-lefty Labour Party member, who hated her, but she was gone before she could cock her arm. Princess Margaret also visited by that’s a story.

I went to Kennington Palace in Hyde Park a few times to play football against the Royal Household football team. I never saw Princess Diana but on one day the referee blew the whistle and ordered us off the field…next thing we knew a helicopter landed on the pitch a limo appeared and King Hussain of Jordan got out of the helicopter and swiftly into the car and off they went. We went back to the pitch to resume the game.

Next up was a visit of the Queen to Queen Mary College, only on that morning I was asked to give a Lecture at the Institute of Neurology to some physiotherapists and she was long-gone by the time I got back to work.

The Queen at Queen Mary…with Mike (Institute Director).

However, I wonder if The Queen ever go fed up with the smell of paint fumes, because everytime she arrived, the places she would go were re-painted a day or two before she arrived.

Any way don’t forget about thursday.

  • No royalty at my MSc graduation (City University). My undergraduate degrees were from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. I regret skipping my BA ceremony as I later learned Sam Neill spoke. I didn’t actually realise I was eligible to graduate that year and waited until I got my LLB the following year. I don’t recall who the honoured guest was at that ceremony! Prince Charles spoke at a service at Westminster Abbey to mourn the victims of the Christchurch earthquake, I think of that day as I watch the Queen’s funeral there now.

  • Nice to read about your royal experiences MouseDoc

Re meeting Princess Anne “whilst getting a BSc…..However, I have to say the experience was so boring with a 2-3 hour procession of thousands of names …”
Boring for you, probably worse for the Princess

Re “I suspect she would have refused to wear Jeans and a T-shirt to meet me:-)”
    – good point

Re wonder “if The Queen ever go fed up with the smell of paint fumes”
    – so royals had better not be sensitive to paint fumes 🙁

    • Yes I think the Princess Royal had a snooze….only good bit was when she was swinging a sword for the Doctor of Science awards That was after the A-Z of graduate degrees and the A-Z of doctor of philosophy…They stopped awarding them years ago, which is a shame as it is a nice scarlet/crimson gown as opposed to the London University Maroon and the tudor tea bag hat
